Exhale is shutting down on December 31, 2024. If you’re an active Exhale user, here are some resources to help you disconnect and take any final actions such as repaying an advance and withdrawing your savings.
A quick summary of what action is required:
- If your paycheck is currently connected to Exhale: you’ll need to disconnect by December 31, 2024. See “How do I disconnect from Exhale?” below.
- If you have an active advance with Exhale: once your paycheck is disconnected you will need to make manual repayments for the remainder of your advance term. See “How do I repay my advance?” below.
- If you have funds in your Exhale Save account: you’ll need to transfer your savings to a personal bank account by December 31, 2024. If you don’t transfer your savings, all funds in your Exhale Save account will be automatically transferred to the bank account you linked to Exhale. See “How do I transfer my savings?” below.
- If your paycheck is not connected to Exhale, you don’t have an active advance, and don’t have any funds in your Exhale Save account, no action is required.
How do I know if my paycheck is connected to Exhale?
You can double check your paycheck connection status by logging in to Exhale and going to the Paycheck tab.
- If you see a button that says Connect your paycheck or Finish connecting, or see a status of Connection requested, it means your paycheck is not currently connected to Exhale.
- If you see a status of Connected or Waiting for your first paycheck, it means that your paycheck is connected to Exhale.
- If you see a status of Missing recent paychecks, your paycheck might be connected to Exhale, and we haven't received a paycheck for your recently.
Remember, if your paycheck is connected to Exhale, you’ll need to disconnect by December 31, 2024 using the steps outlined below.
Here's an example of what a connected paycheck looks like:
How do I disconnect from Exhale?
To disconnect your paycheck from Exhale:
- Log in to your payroll system (for example, ADP, Paychex Flex, Paylocity, Paycom)
- If you don’t have your login information, you can usually request it from your payroll provider or reach out to your employer for help.
- Locate your direct deposit settings
- This is usually located under a section called Pay, Paycheck, Pay Stubs, or Direct Deposit
- Here you should see an account and routing number for Lewis & Clark Bank (Exhale’s partner bank)
- Edit your direct deposit settings so they reflect your personal bank account instead
- Save your settings
Once the updated account and routing numbers are verified by your payroll system, your paycheck will no longer be sent through Exhale and will go straight to your personal bank account.
Please note:
- Some payroll providers can verify your account changes immediately, while others may take up to 5 business days or longer. During this time, your paycheck may still be sent through Exhale. If you have any questions about the verification process, we recommend checking with your employer or your payroll provider’s help center.
- If you have any outstanding advance payments, you'll need to make manual payments until your advance is fully repaid.
How do I repay my advance?
If you were previously on an automatic paycheck repayment plan, your automatic payments will stop after you disconnect your paycheck to Exhale. However, you are still legally responsible for repaying your advance in full.
Your account will remain open to allow you to make manual repayments in the Exhale app. To make a manual repayment:
- Log in to Exhale and go to your Perks
- Find your advance and select View advance
- Select Make a payment now
- Choose which bank account you'd like to repay from
- Select a payment amount. You can either choose the total outstanding balance or enter a custom amount.
- Select Make payment now
You will continue to get notifications about upcoming payments until your advance is fully repaid.
How do I transfer my savings?
To transfer your saved funds from Exhale to a personal account:
- Log in to Exhale
- From the Perks tab, find your Save Perk and select Track
- Scroll down and select Manage saving
- Select Make a withdrawal
- Enter the total amount in your Save account
- Select which bank account the money should be sent to. If needed, you can add another bank account (you'll be taken back to the withdraw screen after you're done).
- Check the box to confirm your boost will be affected, then select Withdraw
If you don’t do this by December 31, 2024, all funds in your Exhale Save account will be automatically transferred to the bank account you linked to Exhale. (If you have more than one bank account linked, we’ll send the funds to the account that you previously selected as your paycheck destination.)
Will I still get my Save boost?
If you’ve earned part of a save boost but haven’t reached the payout date yet, Exhale automatically deposited the boost you’d earned as of November 26, 2024 to your Save account. To verify, look for an entry called “Boost” in your Save history. When you transfer funds out of your Save account, your prorated boost amount will be included.
Will I still have access to my account after disconnecting?
You can still access your Exhale account for a limited time after disconnecting your paycheck. If you want to view or save your Perk history, you can do so by logging in to your account, going to the Perks tab, and selecting the Perk History button at the bottom of the screen.
How long will Exhale Support be available?
Exhale Support will be available until December 31, 2024. Please direct any questions to help@exhalefi.com before that date.
Why is Exhale shutting down?
Over the course of Exhale’s existence, we’ve been proud to provide financial wellness tools to support our users at no cost. Unfortunately, external challenges and limited resources have made this approach unsustainable. After exhausting all options for keeping our services available, we’ve made the difficult decision to sunset Exhale’s services on December 31, 2024.
Where do I go if I need financial support?
Some platforms, like Payactiv and EarnIn, offer access to their financial wellness services even if your employer doesn’t have a partnership with them. Usually, these platforms allow you to get early access to your pay for free if you select standard delivery. Be aware, you may be charged a fee for expedited deliveries.
Other platforms, like Clair and DailyPay, offer similar services to Exhale but require a partnership with your employer.
